Stereo Lab stone horn with Altec drivers
I'm interested to know of people's experience using the artifical stone horns by German supplier, Stereo Lab.
They seem to promote BMS and other comp drivers....but the horns have a real appeal. Would sure love to try that 96cm, 140Hz horn....
I'd like to develop a 'simple' two-way unit, using a 600Hz horn, coupled with the 416 bass driver in a sizeable cabinet....eg similar to Shindo. I'd cross it over around 700Hz...and use GPA's 90s driver.
Scroll down on this link to see a an interesting two-way similar to what I'd like to achieve.
Any thoughts?

Re: Stereo Lab stone horn with Altec drivers
Hi Andrew,
I use the Stereo Lab 600Hz horns with my Altec 288-16G drivers and the Altec 515 B 's in Bill Woods Half Horn cabinets.
The crossover is first order at 900--1000 Hz.
This combination works very well with my Lyrita Audio(India) SET45 amp.

Nice unit.
How do you fnd the high frequencies?
Also, why the 288 driver compard to, say, the 902...? I understand the 288 is sitefor high ouput applications.

Hi Andrew,
The HF sounds perfect to me .I have no complaints.
I like the ease of presentation and effortless sound of the 288 compared to the 802/902.
There is more body to the music with the 288.

No stereolab horns, but I do have GPA 902-16A's, and Altec 288-8K's.
I agree with the previous post. The 288's have more body, are effortless in comparison. This was not unexpected. Note that the comparisons were not on equal footings, simply whatever and however it was hooked up at that time.
In rudimentary testing with a signal generator , the 288's do drop like a rock @ 14k, which also was not unexpected, but that it could be a facet of the crossover (1285-8A iirc) should be factored in.
